The Mayor Sez…
The town is alive with things going on. We had our 1st Iowa Living Roadways meeting last week, Tuesday evening, with a great turn-out of community minded people in attendance. Some couldn't make it due to other commitments. I think everyone there realizes that this may be our chance to beautify our city for people passing through Odebolt along our highways and for those that drive through our city proper. There were many suggestions presented. Our next meeting. is April 29th at 7 P.M. at the fire station (if not available will use the Odebolt Community Center)     The OA fifth grade is planting tree for Arbor Day tomorrow.
The movie crews have been in town working on various background scenes downtown along with the casting people doing auditions for extras.
This being “Secretary’s Week” be sure and do something nice for your secretary.
Last, but surely not least, we will begin the long process of studying ways to meet the EPA requirements for our waste water system. Our Iowa League of Cities reports there are 136 cities making waste water upgrades with nearly 50% of these cities estimating a cost of improvements to exceed $1,000,000.00.

Visioning Committee to Take Inventory
of Odebolt as part of Design Process

The Odebolt visioning committee will meet on April 29 at 7 pm at the Odebolt Community Center to begin assessing Odebolt’s areas of opportunity and articulating desired changes.
Meeting participants will discuss factors that influence the planning and design of the community landscape: visual quality, historical and cultural resources and events, and natural resources. The group will divide into three teams to gather information about these factors and the results will be collated at the next meeting in order to assess the landscape of Odebolt as a whole.
All are invited and encouraged to attend the meeting and participate in the community assessment.
The Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation in partnership with Iowa State University Extension Landscape Architecture and Trees Forever, an Iowa-based nonprofit organization with a mission to plant trees and care for the environment. Since 1996, 137 Iowa communities have benefited from the Visioning Program.
Residents who want more information or who are interested in participating in the visioning process should contact Joan Godbersen City Clerk, 712-666-2231 or Patty Petersen, Trees Forever Field Coordinator, 319-934-3140.

The Prom 75 Years Ago
as remembered  by Elaine Raasch.

In 1933, Elaine graduated with a class of thirty students. There was no yearbook that year. The Senior Prom was to have the theme of "Hard Times," something the students knew well during the depression years. Decorations included brown wrapping paper on the tables and kerosene lamps.  The highlight of the evening was choosing a person who was dressed most in keeping with the theme of "Hard Times," which Elaine won. They were not allowed to dance. In order to have one new dress for class day, baccalaureate, and commencement, Elaine and her mother backed the "struggle buggy" up to the hen house, loaded the hens into a gunnysack, and took them to be sold. Then they took the money to Storm Lake and bought a dress.

Earl Herman Diersen, age 88, of Odebolt, died suddenly at this home on Saturday, April 12, 2008.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 15th at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt with Burial at the Odebolt Cemetery. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m., Monday, April 14th at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt.

The Mayor Sez…
Did anyone read the Iowa Population Stats in The Chronicle last week? It says that population in Iowa has increased every year since 1988 near or in the metro areas. Sac County’s population has decreased by nearly 10% since the year 2000. In Sac Co. there are more deaths than births. Also, migration of our young people has taken its toll.
Will losing our high school make a difference on our young people migrating or will it even matter? Only time will tell. The bottom line is that rural Iowa’s population is thinning out. We must be aware of all of the above and conduct our selves, our town, and our businesses accordingly.

The Iowa’s Living Roadways Visioning
Program Quick Fact Sheet
A Program Delivered to Iowa Communities
by Trees Forever and ISU Department of Landscape Architecture and sponsored by Iowa Department of Transportation

What is the Iowa’s Living Roadways Visioning Program?
The Iowa’s Living Roadways Visioning Program provides an opportunity for Iowa communities
with fewer than 10,000 people to access professional landscape planning and design assistance.
Through a series of planning meetings a local, volunteer committee works with a Trees Forever
facilitator, a professional landscape architect, and a design team from Iowa State University
Department of Landscape Architecture to identify potential landscaping projects and to create
several images of what finished projects in their community might look like. Volunteer visioning committees across the state have been successful in developing these projects from this
conceptual stage to detailed plans and finally into implemented landscape plantings.
What kind of commitment is needed from the community?
A community that applies for the Iowa’s Living Roadways Visioning Program must identify at
least 8 community leaders—for example, business people, local government representatives, teachers, seniors, and others—to serve on a committee that meets eight to ten times over a six month period. These committee members will:
· assess their community’s natural, cultural, and visual landscape resources
· identify and prioritize community needs
· consult with a professional designer in developing a community landscape concept plan
· work with the facilitator to determine potential funding sources for implementing the
concept plan
· initiate the first phase of landscaping projects.
A participating community also agrees to contribute $1,000 toward the implementation of a
project identified in the visioning process.
What kinds of projects are addressed in the Visioning Process?
Communities working with any of the following issues can benefit from this visioning program:
· Relocation of highways or highway entrances
· Entryway planning, design, and beautification
· Recreational trail opportunities and enhancements
· Protection/enhancement of natural areas adjacent to roadways
· Planning and design of alternative transportation opportunities.

Odebolt will start this planning process on Tuesday, April 15th 7:00 p.m.
at the Odebolt Fire Station.
For more information on how you can participate contact Joan Godbersen 712-668-2231 or Trees Forever, 800-369-1269.

Arriving in Odebolt for the first time

A. B. Waggoner
I landed in Odebolt on April 10, 1881, and have called this my home town ever since. Well do I remember how the train we arrived on got snowbound east of town, and how after considerable delay and work the drifts were cut through. Between here and Ida Grove the drifts were so deep that the train again was halted. There were about 40 people aboard, some headed for Ida Grove, others to Battle Creek and other nearby points. Some of them were obliged to reach their destinations with sleds after leaving the train.  (Read more of this story at Pioneer Recollections.)

What is the Iowa’s Living Roadways Visioning Program?
March 19 - The Iowa’s Living Roadways Visioning Program provides an opportunity for Iowa communities with fewer than 10,000 people to access professional landscape planning and design assistance. Through a series of planning meetings a local, volunteer committee works with a Trees Forever facilitator, a professional landscape architect, and a design team from Iowa State University Department of Landscape Architecture to identify potential landscaping projects and to create several images of what finished projects in their community might look like. Volunteer visioning committees across the state have been successful in developing these projects from this conceptual stage to detailed plans and finally into implemented landscape plantings. The Mayor Sez…
I have a friend that works at the Kinder Morgan pipeline in California. They handle about 4 million gallons of fuel a day and he has been there for about 30 years. He sent me the following tips: Only buy your gas early in the morning when the gas is the coldest and dense. When it gets warmer gasoline expands so buying in the afternoon - your gallon is not a gallon. In the petroleum business the specific gravity and the temperature of the gas play an important role. A 1 degree in temp is a big deal in this business. Pump your gas slowly, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created as they go back to the storage tanks. And always fill if you can at half full/half empty because the more gas in your tank the less air occupies empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine.
I hope the above will help you get the most for your money - and buy American! Boycott companies that buy Mid-East oil. They are Shell, Chevron, Texaco, Exxon/Mobile, Amoco and Citgo. American companies are Conoco, Sinclair BP/Phillips, Sunoco and any E85 ethanol blend.
