The
Mayor Sez…
Lots of rain of late; I guess the old German knew what
he was talking about when he said , “Vell, vell, it alvays rains at der last
minute!” The rain has held up the intersection finish work on Hwy 175 and No.
Main. Hopefully, this week the project can come to a conclusion.
One of my favorite prognostications about the future
is, “When the 4th of July comes and goes, Labor Day will be here before we
know it.” Well, Labor Day weekend is here! I urge everyone to drive with
care and have a safe holiday weekend.

The Mayor Sez…
In reference to the street blockage at N. Main and Hwy.
175, the military has a word for it---FUBAR (fouled up beyond all
recognition). Anyway, I do have assurances from Cedar Valley Construction, the
prime contractor, that the above situation should be finished, weather
permitting, soon!!
The Public Safety Committee made the decision to
continue using the sheriff’s dept. and the reserve officers to do part time
patrolling. School start-up was also discussed and the need for careful
driving at intersections, especially, while our kids are crossing the streets.
Tornado season is still upon us and a brief review of our emergency procedures
were discussed. Odebolt is very fortunate to have top notch first responders
(fire, police, ambulance). For your information the fire station will be the
command post for all aid, communications, and etc. If the fire station is
destroyed the community center or the school building may be used. Let us hope
our luck continues and none of this becomes necessary.

The
Mayor Sez…
I would like to take a moment to talk about “Nuisance
Abatement Notices” and what they mean. When it is brought to the city
council’s attention that there is an unsightly property due to debris, junk,
weeds, un-mowed lawns, and etc. the owner/renter is sent a letter to abate the
nuisance within 30 days; depending on the circumstances, extensions can be
allowed, if necessary. If the owner/renter does not comply within the 30 day
time period a citation will be issued and a fine could be a possibility,
depending the discretion of the judge. The city council is dedicated to keep
our city as neat as possible. Your continued diligence in keeping our city
nice and tidy is appreciated.
I would like to congratulate our boys, girls, and
coaches on having respectable baseball and softball seasons. Your hard work
paid off. OA football and volleyball seasons are upon us. Good luck and GO

Flamingos on the Move!--Flamingos, flamingos, everywhere flamingos!
After an extended stay on Mandernach Drive, the flamingos dropped in on Wanita
and Eugene Friedrichsen. Apparently they were serving the same flamingo feed
as the residents on Mandernach rive. Their next stop was at the Merle and Deb
Miller home. The beautiful flowers were the obvious attraction. When they had
received their fill of the heavenly scent they crash-landed at Margaret and
Dr. John Hubiak's for a little TLC. The exhausted birds spent some time
relaxing at the Hubiak residence before moving on to the front lawn at
Einspahr Furniture. A lone flamingo now stands on the lush lawn, having
decided to make it his permanent residence. The rest of the flock has moved
on, but not before leaving off some precious cargo at Cubby's. If you look
closely you'll see a baby flamingo nestled down in the snack shelves. For now
the flashy pink fowl are resting at the home of Matt Gritten.
Keep watching for the flamingos! Who knows where they'll land next. If anyone
would like to donate to the sign project and have the flamingos in your yard,
contact Rotary member Rendee Wallace at 668-4886.

The
Mayor Sez…
I asked a 16 year old the other day if he was ready to
go back to school in a few weeks. His reply was, "You think I'm crazy!" Well,
ready or not, both college and public school start-up is about upon us.
Jeannette, our pool mgr., tells me that we can go until
the 18th on keeping the pool open. We are working on getting help to open
after that on weekends only. We'll keep you posted.
I went with Elaine to an all school alumni group that
Lake View holds each year. They were a very friendly, cordial group and were
entertained by an Elvis Presley impersonator. He did a great show.
I read somewhere the reason a dog has so many friends
is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.
From the 'bolt.
