The Mayor Sez...
Hey! Hey! –looks like winter is here to stay. The street dept. would like to thank everyone for keeping their cars and other vehicles off of the street while it is snowing (and abiding by the winter street ordinance)
School is out for Christmas vacation so let us all keep an eye-out for our kids. Kids will be everywhere---sledding, snowmobiling, or just playing in or on the drifts by the roads. And since I mentioned snowmobiles, please abide by all the laws, rules, and regulations thereof, enough said!
Happy Holidays!!!

Drive-By Shooting Occurs in Rural Odebolt  - at 7:47 p.m. on Monday, December 22, 2003, the Sac County Sheriff's Office responded to 3335 Ira Avenue on a reported drive-by shooting in which the occupant of the residence was shot at as he sat in his house.
During the course of the investigation, it was determined that 63-year old Patrick Scanlan of Kiron, Iowa drove to the victim's residence and fired at least one shot into the house.  A deer slug was recovered from an interior wall.  The victim obtained a partial license plate number of a suspicious vehicle in the area after calling the Sheriff's Office from another residence.  The victim, who drives a school bus for Odebolt-Arthur Schools, recognized the truck and the partial plate as being a vehicle that he had earlier in the day turned into law enforcement for passing a stopped school bus.
Based on this information, the Sac County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol went to the Scanlan residence located at 3619 Corey Avenue, Kiron, Iowa, where a 20 gauge shotgun and deer slugs were seized as well as a 1995 Ford truck registered to Scanlan.
Sac County Sheriff's Office charged Patrick Scanlan with the following charges:  1) Attempted Murder - Class "B" felony, 2) Terrorism - Class "C" felony, and 3) Going Armed with Intent - Class "D" felony.
Scanlan is being held in the Sac County Jail on $55,000.00 bond.
No injuries were reported.   Iowa State Patrol Troopers assisted the Sheriff's Office.

Results of Friedrichsen Death Show Accidental - The Sac County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 that the investigation in the shooting death of Michael Friedrichsen of Odebolt, Iowa was accidental.
Ballistics report from the DCI Lab show that the fatal shot was fired from a .223 caliber rifle by a member of the hunting party who was hunting with Friedrichsen.
DNR officers have filed with the Sac County Clerk of Court charges on two of the members of the hunting party for Shooting a Rifle from the Roadway.  This is a simple misdemeanor charge.  The two charged are Greg Schroeder, age 23, of Breda, Iowa and Taylor Schroeder, age 21, from Wall Lake, Iowa.  Both men will be given a court date to appear before the Sac County Magistrate.

Sac County Farmland Increases  - The average value of an acre of farmland in Iowa reached $2,275 in 2003, the highest figure reported since Iowa State university began conducting an annual survey of land values in 1941.
In Sac County, the average value of an acre of farmland in 2003 was $2,678 compared to $2494 in 2002, an increase of $184.  ISU Extension completed the survey, in conjunction with real estate brokers, farm lenders, and others who work directly with the land markets.

Is Gambling in Sac County's Future? - Voters in Sac County will decide on January 6 if they support gambling in Sac County.  The question on the ballot reads:  "Gambling games on an excursion gambling boat in Sac County are approved."  Voters will vote either yes or no.  Absentee ballots are now available at the Sac County Courthouse.
Gambling proponents in Sac County have proposed the development of a casino complex on one of the Hallett Materials gravel pits southeast of Wall Lake.  The area could easily accommodate a boat, according to Wall Lake City Manager Tom Schroeder.
Supporters point to the Catfish Bend Casino as an example of what a boat in Sac County could be similar to.  They say that such a boat could employ 320 people in Sac County, with a payroll of $8 million.  Gaming in Iowa is a $229 million business, which supports 9,000 jobs in the state.  The gaming industry attempts to do as much business locally as it can, and makes charitable contributions to local and state organizations.
Pastor Brian Krause of the Faith Bible Church in Sac City is the chair-person of the "Don't Gamble With Our Future Committee".  They are for Sac County, and are for families, but are against gaming in Sac County.  Krause said, "Is gambling economic development?  Does it manufacture, grow anything, export anything, or create goods and services? Gambling creates no new wealth, it just re-distributes it."
In order for a casino to happen in Sac County, several things have to happen.  First, a referendum has to pass in Sac County.  Then, a non-profit entity would need to be created that would be the basis of the casino management.  They would have to work with Hallett's Materials to secure a site for the casino.  The State of Iowa would have to lift their moratorium on new gaming licenses.  A casino management firm would have to construct and operate the casino.  A license would have to be granted to them to operate in Sac County.  The infrastructure around the casino would have to be built.

Season's Greetings!

The Mayor Sez...
Hey, after today there are only 5 shopping days till Christmas (as if we procrastinators didn’t know).
It looks like winter will officially begin this week’s end, as the winter solstice will arrive. Brrrr!! It appears as though we are in for plenty of “old man winter” for the next 90 days. If you will remember, I mentioned a few months ago that the price of natural gas is going to go up. Not only has it gone up, it has gone ballistic; 40% up in just one week (source: commodity price on the big board). Why do I mention the above? There is still time to buy some electric space heaters and get your thermostat turned down. It can $ave you a bundle.
At this time on behalf of the City of Odebolt’s administration and it’s employees, I would like to wish each and everyone of you a Merry, Merry and a Happy, Happy!

Winner of Doll House Raffle - Grace Smith, daughter of Darren & Maren Smith of Arthur, was the very lucky winner of the doll house that the Odebolt Chamber of Commerce was raffling.  When Grace first saw the doll house she asked her mom for a dollar so she could sign up.  Shortly after, the Smiths were in Sioux City where Grace purchased some wooden dollhouse furniture which she stained and varnished.  She also made "sleeping bags" for her Barbies with the help of Grandma Susan (Bergman).  All along, Grace continued to ask her mom, if she had won and the answer was always the same, "We'll have to wait and see."  So on December 6, when Maren got the phone call that Grace had won, she kept it secret from Grace as the two drove to Odebolt to pick up the doll house.  Just as Grace got to the Odebolt Community Center, she began to wonder if she had won, and she did!  Grace was very excited and shocked.
As Grace continues to work on projects for her doll house, she has carried the secret intention of presenting this gift to her sisters, Anna and Elsie, for Christmas.  They are surely fortunate to have a sister like Grace!

Date set for Sac County Vote on Riverboat Gaming - Sac County residents will go to the polls on January 6, 2004 to decide whether riverboat gaming should be allowed in Sac County.

The Mayor Sez...
A few weeks ago I wrote an article on “attitude”. Believe me, I had quite a bit of feedback on that article and it was 100% positive. Attitude determines attitude. Today I can whine because I have to go to work or, I can shout for joy because I have a job. I can grumble about my health or, I can rejoice that I am alive. What today will be like is up to me. I get to choose what kind of a day I will have. Yours truly will add to that in saying ”I hope”.
A Santa alert! Only 14 day until Christmas!
