The Mayor Sez…
Have you ever seen so many bikers as a few days ago?  I am told many bikers preferred to ride thru Odebolt on to Lake View and then hook up with the Sauk Bike Trail (Sauk Rail Trail) on towards Carroll. Something tells me that there were plenty of RAGBRAIERS around the local area for everyone to see.
Not to change the subject, however, I am getting many comments from around town about some unsightly properties. Trust me, it will be at the top of my list for the next City Council meeting.

Book Signing—The Odebolt Public Library hosted a book signing for Beverly Royster Veengaas on July 7. Her book is Brushy Crick Kids. Read the article by Chronicle reporter Carma S. Reinert in this week’s issue.

Wedding—Do you miss the days when newspaper wedding write-ups had details of the bridal gown, what the groom wore, what the wedding party wore, the flowers, the table decorations at the reception? The Chronicle still publishes these wonderful articles. This week’s issue has a very descriptive account of a March wedding at First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt and the reception at the Odebolt Community Center. Read it, and you can visualize the wedding in your mind’s eye.

August 3rd Ida County Courier - O-A School Board discusses science room project in special session; school registration times set; Friday is deadline for filing papers for school board elections; post-RAGBRAI report.

Excerpts from the Odebolt History Pages
ODEBOLT OBSERVER
Vol. 2, No. 5, AUGUST 3, 1881
F. R. BENNETT, PUBLISHER

--You may shoot prairie chickens after August 15th.
--The railroad fare from Chicago to New York is down to $7.
--H. F. Warneke, the new grain and stock man, reports business as booming.
--The flax mill shut down for the season last week. It will resume work when the new crop of straw is ready to work.
--Rev. H. T. Martin preached last Sabbath at the Levey school house in the morning, and Presiding Elder Layton in the evening.
--The new residence of W. A. Helsell, in West Wheeler addition, is now ready for the plasterers. Messrs. Graham and Conklin are the builders.
--Over thirty-five dwellings and business houses are now in different stages of construction here. There are many more in contemplation, but it is impossible to state the number with accuracy.
--The editor of the Reporter [the other Odebolt newspaper at the time] takes the ladies of the W. C. T. U. to task for something they are alleged to have said concerning his course on the temperance question, and then goes on to define his position. He is not very lucid in his statements, but we think he means to say that he will oppose the proposed constitutional amendment. If we are correct, we congratulate him upon arriving at so sound a conclusion, and shall look to see the Reporter give the dogma of prohibition some hard knocks in the fight that is to come.

NOTICE is hereby given to the owners of cows in the town of Odebolt, forbidding the hitching of cows in the alleys at night. All cows so found hitched hereafter, will be removed by the marshal at the expense of the owner.
By order of the Council.
S. KENNEDY, Marshal.

The Mayor Sez…
One more reminder for you entrepreneurs, approximately 1500 RAGBRAI support vehicles will be traveling thru Odebolt on Monday, July 24th. It will be interesting to see how clever our roadside vendors will be in trying to attract these vehicles to stop at their particular roadside spots. Good luck!
Incidentally, while I am on the subject of RAGBRAI, if you want to get a look at the RAGBRAIERS riding their bikes, Kiron or Boyer would be good places to go. They will be passing thru, or near by, on Monday the 24th. Could be fun!
     From the ‘bolt,

Letter to the Editor—
The women of the Odebolt American Legion Auxiliary are deeply appreciative of the community’s support of their programs.
We appreciate the 4th and 5th grade students and teachers for participating in the successful poppy poster contest in May.
We acknowledge everyone who made the May poppy distribution a positive effort, especially the businesses that allowed us to stand and distribute: Meta Bank, Odebolt State Bank, United Bank of Iowa, Jamboree Foods, Cubby’s, Sparky’s of Odebolt and Arthur, and the Post Office.
Recognition goes to Odebolt Women’s Club, Tuesday Club, and Ingleside Club for monetary support towards Girls State expenses and to Dani Trimble for driving her convertible in the Creek Days Parade with Kandi Neville.
We respect Renae Babcock as the Legion’s caretaker of the listing of the names for the Avenue of Flags, and the Post Office for permitting the Legion to display the flags. We value Barb Votrobeck and the O-A Band for their participation in a meaningful service Memorial Day at the cemetery.
We recognize Caroll Kies of Caroll’s Kitchen for providing a warm atmosphere and great food for our meetings and Barb Girvan Horak for her Odebolt web site endeavors.

Odebolt Public Library Board—(excerpted from June 12 minutes) The Summer Reading Program has been well received by both participants and parents with good, but varying attendance numbers. The two new computers have been very well received by the public. Jack Bensley has donated two chairs, plus a possible future third one.
Rachel Wallace reported for the Building and Grounds Committee: She has met with Hasselhoff and the ridge roll has been opened further, plus three new vents are now installed in the roof. The mold has been painted with Clorox water and needs to be re-checked in the fall. There may be some possibility of the city helping with the floor problem expenses. Greg Neville has cut off the inside door bottom, and it now closes.

Bicycles in our History!
From the Odebolt History Pages

(Note:  To find these articles click the link, then hit "Control and the 'F' key to bring up the "find" feature.  Type in "bicycle" and hit enter.)

From:  "Fifty Years of Progress, August 25, 1938, The Odebolt Chronicle", Miscellaneous Items
G.H. Parker apparently was the first bicycle owner in Odebolt, according to the Observer for Nov. 9, 1881. "There is a bicycle in town. G.H. Parker is the only man who can run it. While out with it the other day it attracted many observers, but there wasn't a boy dared climb the thing but George.

From:  The Odebolt Chronicle, Vol. 40, Number 8, March 24, 1927.  Pioneer Days: Mayor and Mrs. J. E. Einspahr
(1882) Bicycles were then in vogue and a factory was situated in the basement of the Mattes block and run by Cloid Smith. This enterprise was abandoned when Mr. Smith built the telephone exchange in Odebolt. Mr. Einspahr bought some of his equipment and continued to sell and repair [bicycles] at his shop. After the bicycle craze had died out and the automobile was taking its place, John went into this business.

From: CHERRY [SISTERS] v. DES MOINES LEADER
1901 - One of the Cherry Sisters describes her bicycling costume - " ... in the act that we call 'The Gipsy's Warning.'  I wear my bicycle bloomer rig. They reach to my knees, and are divided like leggings,--black leggings with buttons on them. I wear a blue blouse,--a blue velvet blouse. Sometimes red and sometimes green. I have many suits; wear them in turn. The leggings are always black.

From: THE CHRONICLE. VOL. 17. NO. 11. JULY 16, 1903.

The council has granted William Wollman, manager of the gas plant, permission to ride a bicycle on the sidewalks while engaged in lighting and extinguishing the street lamps.

From: The Chronicle Vol. XXIV, No. 46, March 16, 1911.  Bright Girl Wins Valuable Prize
In competition with nearly four million bright American boys and girls under the age of fourteen years, Eleanor Groman has shown ability superior to any of them as an artist and a writer of verse in a contest recently concluded by the Selz-Schwab Shoe Co., and as a result has been awarded first prize, consisting of a bicycle of excellent make and made especially for her.  ... Her subject was that of a dog, a pet of which she is particularly fond. When submitted the drawing, and accompanying poem, was by unanimous decision awarded first place over all the other contestants. The bicycle will be exhibited for a time at W. J. Ahlberg's and then turned over to the little lady. Eleanor is the twelve year old daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A. Groman and in her school work has long been noted for her mental acuteness.

The Mayor Sez…
I trust everyone got thru the 4th of July holiday O.K. Fortunately, we have a lot of summer left to enjoy. Some rain would just about put everyone in jolly good spirits.
I have just received a communication from the RAGBRAI director informing me to alert all businesses to the fact that an estimated 1500 vehicles will be traveling along Hwy. 175 (thru Odebolt) in support of the bike riders that will be close to our city. The approximate dates will be July 24th and 25th . From past experience I know a lot of support people will be looking for food, especially sweet corn, pizza, chips, watermelon, cantaloupe, and liquid refreshments. Might be worth looking into.

RAGBRAI ROUTE

If you want to see RAGBRAI riders passing near Odebolt, below is a map of the route they will take.  The best bet would be along D54 which runs east and west north of Kiron, and E16, the blacktop that runs east through Boyer.

The Mayor Sez…

My epistle for today is about resurfacing Hwy. 175 next year. It seems as though no matter how hard we try (suggested use of injunction, petition, or whatever) the DOT has evidently made a deal with the concrete contractors to resurface 9 miles of road with Odebolt right in the middle. If they would continue the asphalt overlay as they propose to do from Ida Grove thru Arthur to the Ida/Sac County line, we would have a pilot car and at least one way traffic all next summer, however, as I understand it, that is not meant to be. They SAY they MAY do it in sections; one section to be done west of town and then the next section to be done east of town. They SAY they will provide entry and exit access for all businesses during construction with an agate or rock lay down. None of this is verifiable until we sit down to a pre-construction meeting that will be later this year. They SAY they will keep Hwy. 39 open at all times at our intersection connecting to M43 North. If anybody believes any or all of the above I have a bridge I would like to sell you!
