Monday, August 23, 2010
ODEBOLT CITY HALL

Mayor Rex called the special meeting to order with the following Council in attendance: Flink, Hoefling, Bengford and Hemphill. Absent: Scott. Engineer Neal Kuehl, Insurance Agent Steve Hustedt and City Supt. Bill Tysor were also in attendance.

Mayor Rex welcomed the guests to the meeting.
It was moved and seconded to approve the agenda as posted. Four ayes.

The main purpose of the meeting was to hold a public hearing to review an application for a State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan. The proposed project involves the construction of a new 3-cell wastewater treatment lagoon and associated lift station and force main.

The Mayor opened the Public Hearing at 6:00 p.m. as advertised, which was to inform area residents of the community of Odebolt of this proposed action and to address citizens’ concerns, if any, with the plan. The Mayor asked for questions. There were none. The Mayor held the public hearing open while the Council discussed the 2nd agenda item.

Due to several factors, the City’s current medical insurance increased by 48.03%. Steve Hustedt was present to discuss these issues.

At 6:15 p.m. the Mayor again asked for questions or comments. No one else had arrived or left during this period. Hearing no further comments, the Mayor asked for a motion to close the public hearing. Motion was made by Hemphill and seconded by Bengford with all Council members voting Aye.

From Deb Reinhart:  Things are looking good around Odebolt. The Downtown project is coming along nicely. We will be adding some trees, a pergola to the picnic table area and will do some grass seeding. It is a nice improvement to the downtown area.

AUGUST OBC MEETING MINUTES

The Odebolt Betterment Committee meet August 3, 2010 at 6:00 at City Hall. Present were Joan Godbersen, Kerry and Deb Reinhart, Jack Bensley, Tammy Neuharth, Madeline Meyer, Mary Jeanne Thompson, Linda Godbersen, Janet Leonard and Freida Stehr. The meeting was held a week earlier because of a scheduling conflict.

Madeline called the meeting to order and passed out copies of the minutes from last month’s meeting. She gave everyone a few minutes to read thru and asked if there were any additions or corrections. There were some corrections to the last 2 paragraphs. (Note last month’s minutes for the corrections.) After the corrections were made, a motion was made to accept them.

The treasurer report: checking account balance is $11,847.46. Triangle park savings is $300.48 for upkeep.

Linda gave a report on the REAP grant. Linda, Joan and Deb have met with Greg Neville and have walked the area of the Memorial Walk extension to put the final touches on the grant application. Linda has talked with Gary’s Backhoe about the trenching and the estimate on this is approximately $2.00 per foot and there is 400 foot to be done. The Electric Co. is working on an estimate for the electrical and Linda will keep in contact with him on this matter so that we can finish this application and get it mailed in by the deadline of Aug. 20. Chris Wittaker has made the changes on the maps because we have changed the location of the sidewalk.

Freida and Mary Jeanne have met with Tom Lake who is an employee of Marjo’s Greenhouse in Sac City on purchasing trees for the Downtown Greenspace Project. Marjo’s can order us a 15’ Linden , a 12’ Crimson Maple and a 10’ Weeping Mulberry and plant them for $1000.00. He suggests that we plant them in September and he will also brace them. We have to finish this project by October, because of the Trees Please grant deadline. Madeline will visit more with Tom Lake on this project and find out if there is a guarantee on the trees. Kerry motioned that we plant a Linden, Crimson Maple and a Weeping Mulberry and have Bengford Landscaping do the edging and mulching around the trees, Jack seconded. All ayes. Motioned carried.

It was suggested that maybe we plant some trees in the Odebolt Memorial Walk lot located on the corner of 6th and Locust or maybe plant some by the east Welcome sign.
Kerry will also talk to Bengford Landscaping about landscaping around the area of the meter box located in the southwest corner of the lot.

The City Park shelter house project is complete. The OBC would like to thank the City of Odebolt for paying for the supplies to revitalize the open shelter house and a big thank you to BDH Construction Bryce Hustedt and Hernandez Roofing by Rafael Hernandez for shingling the building. Bengford Landscaping has given us a bid to landscape this area and the City Council has given approval for this project. We will be applying for a grant to do some landscaping around the pillars to try to stop some more of the erosion. We are also thinking about putting in a sidewalk from the main sidewalk to the shelter house and maybe selling cobblestone bricks to help pay for this project.

The next meeting will be Sept 14th at 6:00 at City Hall.  Meeting adjourned.

Secy. Treas.
Deb Reinhart

OBITUARY
DORIS JOHNSON

Doris Jo Johnson, age 96, of Odebolt, Iowa, died August 14, 2010, at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center (ONRC) in Odebolt, peacefully surrounded by her family and members of the faithful and kind staff of that home.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2010, at the Arthur Evangelical Free Church in Arthur, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverends Tom Garasha and Glen Lozier officiated, with burial following in the Kiron Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa.

Born June 12, 1914, at home in Ida County, Iowa, Doris was the second daughter of Will and Anna (Etler) McGee. Doris and her older sister, Helen, were joined in 1919 by her younger brother Charles. Youngest sister Irene joined the family in 1927.

The McGee family was a hard-working farm family. They had gardens and animals and grew and raised everything they needed. Life on the farm was simple but satisfying. Hard work was followed by times of music, puzzles, and enjoyment of God's beautiful outdoors. Doris grew into a great gardener, a hard worker, thrifty always and talented in every kind of work involving thread.

Doris was a woman of strength in character, both physically and spiritually. After her dad broke his neck in the fall of 1933, there was no one to pick their 40 acres of corn so Doris and Helen completed the entire task by hand.

At an early age Doris eagerly went forward at the first evangelical meeting she ever attended. At age 22 she received Jesus as her Lord and Savior at this meeting. Jesus was not just her Savior but her dearest friend and Doris spent every day of her life after that as a Christ-follower, faithful church volunteer and committed soul-winner who was always concerned with the spiritual welfare of everyone she met. She was an enthusiastic greeter at every church service.

Doris met her future husband, Wally Johnson of Kiron, at Reverend Stair's Crusaders Area Youth Group. After dating, they married February 8, 1941, at Doris' family home in rural Ida County. Doris and Wally started their married life at his parents' farm south of Odebolt. Doris was a hard-working partner and fulltime mother and homemaker. They welcomed three children: Reese, Zane, and Lynn. Doris was a great cook and loved to share her home with others.

After Wally passed in 1981, Doris continued on the farm until moving into Odebolt in the mid 80's. There Doris enjoyed "city-life" close to her grandchildren's school activities and closer to her beloved church.

In 2005, Doris moved to the ONRC. Although it was difficult to give up her independence, she learned to love the home.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Reese (Rose) Johnson, and Zane (Carol) Johnson, all of Kiron, and Lynn (Tom) Garasha of Prescott, AZ. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Troy, Jodi, Kristin, Kip, Kim, Carmen; many great-grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives.

In addition to her husband, Doris was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Helen McGee and Irene Lindberg.

STORM:  At about 7 p.m. Sunday evening, August 8, a severe thunderstorm rolled into the area. Rain was reported from 1-1/2 to 5 inches with winds gusting up to 60-70 mph. A big tree in the Odebolt City Park was snapped by the wind. (photo)

GOLF OUTING: Many golfers enjoyed a day of golfing and a steak dinner at the 10th Annual Odebolt-Arthur Booster Club Golf OUting, featuring Johnny Orr, on Friday, August 6 at the Spring Lake Golf & Country Club.

LEMONADE STAND:  Caden Wareham, Hannah Sorensen, Calli Wareham and Skyler Wareham set up a lemonade stand on August 6th. After getting tired and hot sitting at their lemonade stand, they loaded their supplies into a red wagon and walked around the downtown area, selling lemonade to local businesses and patrons. They raised $26 selling their lemonade at 25 cents per glass.
The four children appreciated everyone who either made a donation or purchased lemonade, or both! They plan to donate their money to the Odebolt Swimming Pool. (photo)

President Kathy Larson called the meeting to order. The secretary’s report was approved as read. The treasurer’s report was presented by Treasurer Renae Babcock.

Old Business:
The museum is still looking for yearbooks. When school gets back in session Mary will contact Traci Allen in regard to a few needed yearbooks. A 1974 yearbook was recently added to the museum’s collection.
The window cleaning service has started cleaning the windows and they have done a nice job. Mary and Kathy altered the curtains and put them up in the west window.
The alarm system has been installed and is activated. John Noyd plans to be in town in August along with his nephew and niece, Jim and Bonnie Raasch. They would like to see the alarm system and we plan to take a picture at this time.
The Rotary presented a check to President Kathy Larson at their last meeting from the proceeds of the recent Steak Fry. Kathy shared words of appreciation for all that Rotary does for the museum and our community.
A letter from Eleanor Petersen was read in regard to her recent resignation as museum secretary. Everyone in attendance shared their appreciation to Eleanor for her many years of service.

New Business:
Eleanor Petersen shared the scrapbooks are updated and she would like to have
someone take over the duty of compiling the scrapbooks. After discussion it was decided
all members would collect articles and we would work on compiling scrapbooks together.
A request to borrow the mannequins was discussed. Members felt it would be best
not to start loaning out the mannequins due to how fragile the mannequins are. A motion
was made and voted upon unanimously.
Verna Mae Schwaller shared several items she
is donating to museum’s collection.

The next meeting of the Odebolt Historical Museum will be August 25 at 7:00 p.m.
Visitors and new members are always welcomed.

A friend recently gave me this book (copyright 1922 by Iowa's Scenic Route). In it is the above paragraph describing Odebolt. The book is "dedicated to the hard-working, peace-serving and nature-loving people of Iowa."

I find it interesting that it says "It (Odebolt) is the popcorn center of the world." In the paragraphs about Ida Grove it reads, "It (Ida Grove) is the center of the popcorn industry of Iowa, the county producing annually from 10 to 12 millions of pounds of shelled popcorn." Schaller is not listed in the book.

Liability for film credits drops

The state's potential revenue loss from tax credits owed moviemakers is shrinking, as investigators winnow a list of productions likely to survive enhanced scrutiny after scandal engulfed Iowa's filmmaking incentive program.
The maximum amount of state-backed tax credits that could still be issued for film projects is around $200 million, new estimates from the Iowa's attorney general's office show. The state's maximum theoretical liability was estimated to be about $330.5 million when the fledgling program crashed last year.
Other examples of possible abuses were uncovered, including filmmakers claiming subsidies for expenses in which no cash changed hands and abnormally high prices for other expenses, such as a $1.09 million location fee for the movie "Peacock" in tiny Odebolt.

Lundell Plastics Keeps Shaping Bigger Future
The manufacturing company maintains reputation
as industry innovator

July 13, 2010, Odebolt, IA - Lundell Plastics, an innovative plastics manufacturing company, continues to build its place as an esteemed name in agriculture and beyond. Within the last year, Lundell has manufactured 10 new products. Several months ago, the company added a 13,000-square-foot expansion to its Odebolt, Iowa, headquarters in order to accommodate high demand.
Lundell Plastics saw its first major growth with Poly Cupped Flighting, which has become a standard in the agriculture industry because it’s durable yet gentle. Now Lundell is expanding its lineup with 133 additional sizes of existing products.
“We’re glad that we can offer more for our customers,” said Brian Lundell. “Each new product we unveil is exciting for us, and we will continue to provide products that meet customer demand.”
Several months ago Lundell introduced FreeFlo Telescoping Tubes, flexible seed-distribution tools that help distribute seed to planter boxes. Lundell also unveiled the FreeFlo Wireless Remote. This compact, weather-proof device allows farmers to conveniently control the flow of seed without the hassle of wire snags.
Lundell Plastics also created the QuickHinge, which attaches the lid to the box on a planter. “We have had great success with this product,” Lundell said. “Customers really like the fact that the QuickHinge makes filling the planter with seed much easier.” Just flip the lid open, fill the box, then snap the lid shut. Thanks to the QuickHinge, farmers also don’t have to worry about the lids blowing off during planting.
Lundell Plastics innovations are used in a variety of applications, including the food and biofuel industries. They manufacture all of their products at their headquarters in Odebolt, Iowa, and ship their goods nationally and internationally.
More information about Lundell Plastics and their products is available at www.lundellplastics.com.  Contact: Brian Lundell 877.367.7659

Mission Team Stays in Odebolt (condensed from article by Rick Votrobeck)
The First Presbyterian Church of Odebolt has been sending out mission teams for years. They have assisted in disaster clean up and restoration projects in the aftermath of hurricanes, tornados, and floods. They have constructed a food pantry and provided much needed maintenance in an inner city church in Kansas City. They have assisted in remodeling the home of a paraplegic in Parkersburg and a halfway house in Des Moines. Some members plan their vacations to include these special trips. This year, however, the church's mission team never left town. When they learned that one of their own families had a serious maintenance problem with their home. they volunteered to stay home and help out in any way they could.
The mission team has consisted of eight to ten workers each day, some full time and others helping out when they can. The support team is much larger, with dozens of volunteers providing food and financial assistance for this project.
The nice thing about working at home is that more people can participate. In the first four days, twelve people spent time working onsite and four others assisted with childcare and offsite support. Two members have coordinated the food and beverages, and their list of contributors grows each day. A couple whose kitchen is being remodeled have generously donated their old kitchen cabinets to be used in the project home.
The team gathers for morning devotions at 7:30 a.m. each day, just as they do on any other mission trip. Stronger relationships with each other are built as the team works to assist this family in need. The Lord said "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
At the end of the day, we are all enriched by the effort.

Congressmen Aghast at Arlington Cemetery Scandal
WASHINGTON – For some of the fallen at Arlington National Cemetery, death has brought a treatment far short of what their sacrifices deserved.
An Army inspector general, as well as news media reports, have documented what many in Congress consider shocking mismanagement at such a hallowed site -- one that looms especially large in the national consciousness on July 4th weekends such as this.
     Among the problems:
- Old headstones found discarded in nearby streams and along their banks, some with the names of veterans still visible.
Iowa Congressman Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, came to the hearing with a Washington Post photo of the fragmented headstone of George J. Bihrer, an Army private from Odebolt, Iowa who apparently died in Europe during World War I. He had enlisted in Sac City, Iowa. His nephew still lives there, the congressman’s office said.
“I think a lot of American people are going to have a lot of problems with this, and they already do,” Loebsack said.
Bihrer’s headstone was among those disposed of along muddy creeks near the cemetery. Bihrer’s name and the date 1918 are still recognizable among the bits and pieces of the headstone.  Read the rest of the story

Secretary,

ODEBOLT DRIVE   Perhaps this is already common knowledge, but I noticed there is an Odebolt Drive in Thousand Oaks California.
It is located close to California Lutheran University. It would be interesting to know how the name was chosen!
I found it listed on Google Maps.

Services for Mr. Einspahr were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 4th at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. Reverend David Hemann celebrated the Mass of the Resurrection. Burial was in St. Martin's Cemetery in Odebolt with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 313.

Dale was born on January 22, 1925 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Ben and Stella (McCrea) Einspahr. The family moved to California when Dale was an infant and lived there for about two years. They then returned to Odebolt, where Red and his brother Dean grew up and attended the Odebolt schools. Red enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1943 while still just a junior in high school. He served his country for three years as an Air Sea Rescuer. Upon being honorably discharged, Red came back to Odebolt and finished his school work in order to graduate from Odebolt High School. Following graduation, Red went to work for his father at the Ford Garage in Odebolt doing the books and servicing vehicles.

Red had taken note of a lovely young Odebolt woman, Joan Duffy, during his school years, but Red left to serve during the war and Joan went to Sioux City in 1943 to study nursing. It wasn’t until Joan began working as a nurse in Carroll that she and Red began dating. Red wasn’t about to let her get away again, and he proposed marriage. On August 7, 1947, he and Joan were united in marriage in Odebolt, and they began their journey of 56 years of happy family life until Joan passed away in 2003. Red and Joan were blessed with four children: Rodney, Ellen, Dean, and Karen.

In 1951, Red and his father-in-law, Walter Duffy, purchased a local insurance interest and thus, Duffy and Einspahr Insurance Company in Odebolt was born. Red—and later Joan—would work in this family company for the next 40 years.

Red was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt, where he was baptized in February of 1983 with his grandson, Jon, and confirmed on April 2, 1990, with his grandson, Jory. He served as a director on Sac County Mutual Telephone Company Board, as well as on the Board of Directors for Sac County Farmers Mutual Insurance Company. He was a proud member of the VFW and American Legion in Odebolt.

Red and Joan were 50-year members of a supper club composed of couples from the Odebolt area. They greatly enjoyed the fellowship and treasured the friends in this group.

Dale was an avid sportsman who enjoyed many outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing, however trolling for walleyes was at the top of his list of favorites. He also loved attending any sporting event as long as his grandchildren were participating. Red’s family was very important to him, and he cherished all their visits and always had a camera ready for taking pictures. Red will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father and treasured grandfather. His caring presence and wonderful sense of humor will be deeply missed by all those who loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Rodney and wife Joy Einspahr of Elkhorn, Nebraska; Ellen and husband Rommie Maxey of Houston, Texas; Dean Einspahr of Paraguay; Karen and husband Lee Hemer of Odebolt; brother Dr. Dean and wife Ann Einspahr of Appleton, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren: Jory (Susan) Hemer of Odebolt, Jill (Alan) Lange of Winterset, Iowa; Jeana (Jared) Arbegast of Sheffield, Iowa; Jonathan (Rachel) Hemer of Manning, Iowa; Jeremy Hemer of Odebolt; Mark and Jim McGonigle of Houston, Texas; and Dennis, Elizabeth and Ben Einspahr of Elkhorn, Nebraska; nine great-grandchildren: Halle, Zachary and Karter Hemer; Jacquelyn, Jarel, Raegan and Rafe Arbegast; and Alexander and Emmett Hemer. Other survivors include sisters-in-law: Phyllis Gardner and Betty Hansen, both of Odebolt; brothers-in-law: Richard Duffy of Odebolt; Walter (Pat) Duffy of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Ed Smith of Phoenix, Arizona; many nieces and nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Dale was preceded in death by the love of his life, Joan, on July 13, 2003; his parents, Ben and Stella Einspahr; parents-in-law, Walter and Amelia Duffy; sister-in-law Patricia Smith; brothers-in-law Donald Gardner and Robert Hansen; and his great-nephew, Scott Barnes.

The Odebolt Betterment Committee's Downtown Greenspace Project is closer to becoming a reality. The community, City of Odebolt, Mid-American Energy and the Sac County Endowment Foundation have helped make this dream come true.

Construction will begin soon with Greg Neville Construction and the Electric Co. doing the majority of the work. The plans are to have a horse shoe shaped sidewalk, benches, table, lights and flag poles.

If you are interested in donating to this project contact Deb Reinhart, Joan Godbersen or leave your donation at Iowa State Bank and designate to the Downtown Greenspace Project.    (A list of contributors appears in this week's Chronicle.)
