LETTER TO THE EDITOR

My name is Aedan, I am 10 and my sisters name is Adeline, she is 7. We raised money for the St. Josephs Boys home in Haiti. They lost everything the day the earthquake happened.
My sister and I had thought about what we can do to help people in Haiti. My grandma told us about a man Michael Geilenfeld, who lived in Algona, Iowa and went to Haiti to make a difference. Adeline and I thought we could make a difference by collecting loose change for the boys home he founded.
The 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade class at St. Martin's Catholic Parish in Odebolt helped us collect change during Lent. Between all of us and private donations we raised over $100.
Thanks everyone who donated money for our cause.

Arbor Day Proclamation

Whereas, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and
Whereas, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska, and Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and
Whereas, trees reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife, and
Whereas, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products, and
Whereas, trees in our city increase property value, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community and
Whereas, trees wherever they are planted, are a good source of joy and spiritual renewal, and
Whereas, the City of Odebolt has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting practices

NOW, THEREFORE, I, RONALD J. REX, Mayor of the City of Odebolt, do hereby proclaim April 30th as
Arbor Day

in the City of Odebolt, and urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands, and
Further, I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being of this and future generations.

The following note was sent to The Chronicle by Dorothy Kern of West Des Moines.
In Remembrance of Catherine Cornelia Fisher Flagg, born 3-21-1925, passed away 3-1-2009.

She left Odebolt to attend the University of Washington, married and lived in the Seattle area the rest of her life. She taught for many years. She made many visits to Odebolt as her mother Helen lived there for many years.

This will be the first combined Odebolt-Arthur and Battle Creek-Ida Grove prom, and the junior class is hoping to make this an elegant and memorable evening. The prom sponsor is Kathleen Gunderson and she is being assisted by Jacki Bogue and Karen Cranston.

HOAGIES   On March 29 the high school and middle school students gathered at the MPR to mass-produce hoagie sandwiches for delivery. ‘Peacock’ film to be released April 20

The movie "Peacock" will be released on DVD and Bluray April 20, according to information obtained from “The Movie Insider” and “Amazon” websites.
In May 2008, seven Odebolt residents were cast as extras in the movie and sequences were filmed in Odebolt in and around First State Bank. The extras were Blake Cooper, Mark Stangl, Sharon Rohlf, Karen Hemer, Paul Veit, Mark Heidenreich and Jory Hemer. [editor's note:  I am told that Odebolt Mayor Ron Rex was in 3 scenes as well.]
The psychological thriller takes place in fictitious Peacock, Neb., where Cillian Murphy plays John Skillpa, a shy bank employee who leads a double life with a split personality disorder. Skillpa’s life is shattered when a train crashes in his backyard, revealing a woman living there who no one ever knew existed. A down-and-out Wisconsin girl from the bank clerk’s past holds the key to the secret woman.
Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Susan Sarandon, Josh Lucas, Keith Carradine, Bill Pullman and Graham Beckel star in the film.   Official "Peacock" website

Odebolt Historic Museum Association Meeting, April 7
(from left going clock-wise)  Kathy Larson, curator/president; Betty Hansen, JoAnn Scott, Eleanor Peterson,
Verna Mae Schwaller,  (hidden) Thelma Schroeder, Mary Schroeder and Renae Babcock.

My sister Bonnie and I made a trip to Odebolt this past week to clear up large branches and millions of sticks left by the ice storm last winter at my parents' home.  So I was in Odebolt when the Museum association held their meeting, and dropped in with some items I'd collected to give to them.  Among other topics, they were planning for a joint Sac County history societies' meeting to be held in Odebolt in May.  Also discussed was what times to be open to the public for Memorial Day, and some requests for research that had come in from the public.
Each time I go to the museum, I am so impressed with it, and with the people that have put in countless hours in setting it up and constantly adding new items over the years.
I am also dismayed.  The Museum used to be open on Sunday afternoons for the public.  However, they had to go to an appointment only system, because hardly anyone visited on Sundays.  I have talked to numerous people that live in Odebolt and the surrounding area who have never bothered to visit the museum.  However, during Creek Days it is crowded with people who come in from out of town for the celebration.
I would encourage local people, clubs, and organizations in Odebolt to visit the museum.  It is amazing what has been collected there!  Plan to spend hours, not minutes.  I would also encourage parents and teachers to utilize this outstanding facility in teaching and fostering an interest in history.  Have you taken your children there?
Phone numbers to set up a time are:
(712) 668-2766  Kathy Larson
         668-2823 Renae Babcock- home
         668-4881 Ranae work
         668-4234 Eleanor Peterson
People of Odebolt, and former residents should support the museum so it can continue to operate and keep our history alive for future generations.

TREE DAMAGE IN ODEBOLT:  At the request of Mayor Rex, Chuck Hanson took these photos  to document the tree damage in Odebolt for FEMA. The January 2010 ice storm devastated the area and left the town and outlying countryside without power for days. There had also been many large branches on the streets, but those had been cleared by the time these photos were taken. Sac County was declared a disaster area after the ice storm, which was followed by several heavy snow storms. As of today, April 7, 2010, much of the debris has been cleared by homeowners and the City. The Mayor stated that he is pleased and proud of how citizens have stepped forward to clean up their town.  The snow has been melted only for about a week.

New product signals more efficiency in agriculture

April 7, 2010; ODEBOLT, IA - Last year, Lundell Plastics introduced their FreeFlo Telescoping Tubes: flexible seed distribution tools which have helped farmers shave hours off of the planting season. Now Lundell is increasing productivity again with the FreeFlo Wireless Remote. The product is a breakthrough in planting efficiency because it makes the distribution of seed between equipment almost seamless.  In combination with Lundell’s complete line of planting products, crop producers are able to load planter boxes in a fraction of time it previously required to complete the same job, while spilling lesser amounts of valuable seed.

The remote snaps into place in the new FreeFlo Telescoping Tubes’ ergonomic handle, giving crop producers a comfortable way to control the flow of seed at their fingertips. This allows movement from container to container without interruptions and without the hassle of snagging electrical wires. The FreeFlo Wireless Remote is waterproof and wheatherproof to withstand the elements. Another helpful feature of the remote is that it can be detached from the handle so the auger or conveyor can be controlled remotely during maintenance such as greasing, or in bulk filling applications which may take a while to complete.

The FreeFlo remote is versatile, designed to work with various 12v applications (up to 5 amps) such as actuators, solenoid valves, and throttle control motors. The FreeFlo remote is available direct from
Lundell Plastics at a price of $199 US. This is just one of a few new products Lundell has introduced for 2010. The company is perhaps best known for pioneering plastic in the auger market, replacing
traditional steel flighting with hi-tech poly flighting which is very durable and handles seed more gently. From their headquarters in Odebolt, Iowa they manufacture and ship products internationally. More information about Lundell Plastics and their products is available at www.lundellplastics.com

The shower wall serves as a backing to the shelf. The shelves for the bars of soap are angled to ensure the soap does not slide off the shelf. The edging on the bottom of the shelf was designed to keep the shampoo from falling off the rack.
Third grader Jacob Cowlham invented the “Easy Spout.” Jacob wanted to figure out a way to make it easier to water the animals. He was always spilling the water on his shoes or the ground. His invention makes it easier to pour

Am I going to lose my dollar bet – or am I going to win? I have a one dollar bet with a friend as follows: I say “there will be snow on the ground the 1st of April.” My friend says “The snow will be gone by then.” We’ll see. Win or lose, a dollar doesn’t buy much anymore. Do any of you remember when we could get in the Princess Theater on Friday night for a dime? And buy a bag of popcorn for a nickel? Your girlfriend had to spend her own dime to get in the theater; however, by pre-arrangement you could sit together. If you had a quarter in your pocket you were considered ‘well-off’! I realize that was a long time ago but we still have dimes and quarters in our pocket, but what are they good for? Today we call that ‘pocket change’!

DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver today announced that 35 Iowa communities will receive an estimated $12.4 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds through the Community Facilities and Services Fund and the Water/Sewer Fund.

In the past items have been in the paper asking for volunteers with little or no response.
We are supposed to run with 1 driver and 2 EMT's for a three person crew. Not one day in the month will that happen.
If you can give us one 12 hour shift per week it would work miracles for our staffing problem.
Drivers need a valid drivers license, be insurable and we will train you for CPR.
We can help with the cost of EMT training. There are waivers for anyone with a nursing degree so they can also volunteer.
Please contact any of our crew, they will be more than happy to help you make one of the most rewarding decisions you will ever make.

 The Mayor Sez ...

Rain Rain Rain!!! Most of last week was no sun, lots of fog and plenty of rain. Were those 100-day fog believers right? I have two requests from Mother Nature. One, a slow meltdown to prevent flooding. After the slow meltdown may the sun come out, warm up and dry things out! One important thing about all of the above – we must maintain a positive attitude. We have had enough bad weather this winter to last a lifetime (mine anyway).
Good news! Disaster reimbursement assistance for low-income individuals has been extended another 30 days. The deadline for work to be completed is April 20th, 2010. Applications are available at City Hall.
The Sac County Endowment Foundation gave our Downtown Greenspace Project $12,000.00 and our Museum $2,000.00. We are deeply grateful to Shirley Phillips and her Foundation Board.

Raymond Howard Smith, 91, resident of Tucson, AZ, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2010 after a brief illness with cancer.
Raymond was born in Des Moines, Iowa in September 9, 1918 to his late parents, Clifford and Blaine Smith where he grew up on a farm near Odebolt, Iowa. He was inducted into the Army in 1941 and served 3½ years. After the service, he worked for Collier Publishing Company as District Manager for 15 years. Ray then went into accounting and worked many years for Triple Check Income Tax Service where he managed his own office in San Mateo, CA.
Ray and his wife, Marlene "retired" to Reno, Nevada in 1992 where he continued assisting his clients with their income taxes until last year. In September, 2008, Ray and Marlene moved to Tucson, Arizona to be close to daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Al Storey.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene Smith; sister, Helen Whitaker; stepchildren, Pat Storey of Tucson, AZ, Beverly Barham of Silverton, OR, Richard Hickling of Tacoma, WA; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two nieces and five nephews. We were so lucky to have loved and known this caring, kind and gentle man as we will miss him dearly.
Services were held on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Adair Funeral Homes, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Avenue, Tucson, AZ. Mr. Smith was laid to rest on Monday, February 8, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of AZ in Phoenix, AZ.
We wish to thank Casa de la Luz Hospice of Tucson, AZ for their amazing care and support they provided for Ray and our family during his final days.

Raymond once lived 4.5 miles east of Odebolt on a farm now belonging to Dick Profit. He graduated from Odebolt High School with the class of 1936.

The Mayor Sez ...
As the snow and ice subside, we are going to get a good look at just how much tree limb debris there will be to pick up around town. For low income property owners please stop by City Hall and get the proper forms to fill out as you are going to receive financial help to remove the tree limbs and debris that is on your property. But hurry! The deadline for completion of the work is March 21st. (Date set by FEMA) More information on debris clean-up will follow.
We do not expect the city parking and your property to be cleaned up until sometime in April. It all depends on Mother Nature.
P.S. Chuck holes in our streets will be filled in a timely manner, as we need warmer weather for the best results.

An article in last week’s Chronicle says there is Individual Disaster Reimbursement Assistance for the January 19th storm thru March 21st. Please bear with us (City Hall) until we find out more about this assistance. FEMA was in town last week, however, we still don’t know much more at this time.
Congratulations to OA-BCIG on their earning a trip to the State Basketball Tournament.
