The
Mayor Sez…
This story is about a very small town in Kentucky.
Somehow or other the name of a local dog got on the election ballot for Mayor
- and was elected. They say the new Mayor is having some problems. (Why does
that not surprise me?) He is not allowed in some of the local businesses.
Also, the new Mayor can't speak English so no one can understand what the
Mayor has on his mind. My only thought on the entire fiasco - I'll bet the new
Mayor does not put up with any canine capers. I also wonder if the city
employees "throw him a bone" now and then

PHOTOS OF OUR EARLY POST OFFICE
The post office at Odebolt was established
before the town was incorporated. According to those who are
able to recall, the first post office was established in 1877. It was
in a frame building on the SW corner of Main & Second and later, in
the brick building that replaced the frame building.
In 1928, the office was moved to what many of us older
folks remember as the post office of our youth, on the west side of
the alley on the south side of 2nd Street downtown.
Below are some views of South 2nd Street showing the
old post office building before it was covered by siding. The
links will open in a new browser window or tab. Close each

The Sioux City Journal carried an article last week

I said I would give everyone an update on the
no-smoking bill that is being debated in the Iowa Legislature. My sources tell
me that there probably will be some sort of new law on no smoking but nobody

BIG GRANITE BLOCKS AROUSE
MUCH INTEREST
~~~
Large Blocks of Solid Granite which Weigh More Than Five Ton for Bank
Building
~~~
On Monday the workmen
engaged on the new W. P. Adams block at the corner of Main and Second
Streets were unloading and placing ready for use the great granite
bases for the columns which will grace the front of that building.
There are half a dozen of these of which two weigh approximately
10,600 pounds, nearly five and a half tons each. The others weigh a
trifle less--half a ton or a ton, or some such trifling matter.
These were only a part of the fifteen carloads of stone
to be used in this structure, and were of Georgia granite, selected,
Supt. Joddu says, because of its very light color as well as its other
good properties. This granite is almost as light in color as the stone
to be used for facing the walls, which are to be backed by brick.
The operation of handling these blocks, which measured
about five and a half by six feet by eighteen inches, was child's play
in the hands of these experienced workmen and the tools with which to
do the work. A hand elevator--that is, it was worked by hand power,
lifted one side of these big blocks easily so that rollers and other
equipment could be placed as desired.
The new building will be almost twenty feet from floor
to ceiling and promises from present appearances to be an imposing
structure. That the superintendent knows his biz is self-evident from
the way in which everything hustles along without excitement of any
kind--not even a "holler" or cuss-word.

OBITUARIES
LUVERNE SELLSTROM
Memorial services for Luverne Sellstrom will be held at
Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar, Minnesota in early April. Luverne
passed away on February 20, 2008.
Luverne Muriel (Johnson) Sellstrom was born on December
7, 1918, in Stillwater, MN. She graduated from Stillwater High School and
Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. Her early teaching career was
in Greenbush, Lindstrom-Center City, and Lamberton, all in MN.
In 1945 Luverne married Rev. C. Palmer Sellstrom and
they began their married life and ministry together in Shenandoah, IA. Two
daughters, Cheryl and Bonita, were born there. In 1950 the family moved to
Odebolt, IA, where they lived for 32 years. During this time Luverne
shared in her husband's ministry, often with her musical talents. She also
was a dental assistant and the last 15 years taught English in the
Odebolt-Arthur middle school. Many life-long friendships were developed in
the Odebolt, Arthur and Kiron area.
In 1982, after retiring from preaching and teaching, they moved to their
retirement home at Green Lake in Spicer, MN, where they enjoyed fishing
and becoming active in their new area and community.
After her husband's death, Luverne moved to Willmar,
MN, so she could be near Bethel Lutheran, the home of her many
involvements. At Bethel she volunteered in the church office, sang in the
choir, played in the handbell choir, directed the youth handbell choir,
was a Matins organist, taught classes, quilted, and was active in many
other areas.
At home she loved using her computer to stay in touch

LORRAINE E. (ANDERSON) LOVAIN
Lorraine E. Lovain, age 89, of Arthur, Iowa,
died Monday, March 3, 2008, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March
8, 2008, at the Arthur Evangelical Free Church in Arthur, Iowa, under the
direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Glen Lozier
officiated, with burial following in Hayes Township Cemetery, rural
Arthur, Iowa.
Lorraine Evelyn Anderson was born on April 15th, 1918,
at home in Arthur, Iowa. She was the second daughter of Reuben and Hazel
(Bergman) Anderson, the first being Ruth Caroline. She grew up in Arthur,
attending school here through high school. She loved being a child in
Arthur and told her children and grandchildren many tales of her
adventures. For example, by the time she was 12, she had climbed every
tree in Arthur.
Following high school graduation, Lorraine worked at a
variety of jobs in Arthur, including the Post Office. In April of 1940,
she had a deep religious experience and was baptized in the Arthur Baptist
Church, which her grandparents had built and pastored. The following
September she left for Chicago to attend the Free Church Bible Institute.
This was a time of significant experiences for her and also where she met
Bertil Lovain, then a student at North Park Theological Seminary. They
were married on April 25th, 1943, Easter Sunday.
Bertil was then pastoring the Lily Lake Covenant Church
near Chicago, and in April of 1944, their first child was born, Ruthanne.
They next moved to Pilot Mound, Iowa, where their second child, Deborah
Lorraine, was born. Bertil's next church was Bradford, Pennsylvania. Here
Timothy Bertil and Mary Beth were born. Their time in Bradford ended
unhappily as in the fall of 1952, first Mary Beth, then Debbie and
Ruthanne, and finally, Lorraine herself fell ill with polio. Bertil had
already accepted a pastorate in Loveland, Colorado, so Lorraine and
Ruthanne were transferred to hospitals in Denver and Hazel, Lorraine's
mother, helped Bertil move and then stayed to care for the younger
children.
But even this did not keep Lorraine down for long. She
basically rehabilitated herself with persistence and determination and was
able to walk again. She also hoped to again be able to swim, ride a bike,
and ice skate, and was able to do two out of three.
The family moved from Loveland to Scottsbluff,
Nebraska, and then to Cloquet, Minnesota. Lorraine was fully involved in
the life of the church, serving in many capacities. While in Cloquet,
Lorraine and Bertil became foster parents to Mary Lynn Clark, who became a
part of their home and hearts from then on.
It was also during this time that they bought lakefront
property and built a simple cabin. Lorraine loved being at the cabin and
rarely missed a day of swimming. She was known for her dives and "coffee
on the raft."
The older children were graduating and going off to
college, so only Betsy was still at home when they moved to Cedar Rapids,
Iowa. Ruthanne went to college in Chicago where she met her husband, Bill
Werner. Debbie went to school in Duluth and there met her husband, Don
Gustafson. Tim went to the University of Chicago and later worked in
Washington, D.C. where he met his wife, Beth Hoyas. Betsy attended college
in Le Mars, Iowa, and moved with her parents to Wausa, Nebraska, where she
met her husband, Doug Wakeley.
Lorraine continued her involvement in the church
through one more pastorate, in Upsala, Minnesota. She and Bertil retired
in 1987 and moved to Arthur, where Lorraine had inherited her mother's
house and where her sister, Ruth, was now also living. Lorraine and Ruth
had always been close and Ruth's daughter, Colleen, became best friends
with Ruthanne and Debbie. They experienced wonderful summers in Arthur
with their patient and indulgent grandmother.
Retirement years meant traveling for Bertil and
Lorraine. They made several trips to Sweden, and also traveled to England,
Germany and other European countries. They spent long summers at the cabin
and Christmas gatherings in their own or their children's homes.
Besides Arthur and the cabin, Lorraine also loved
music and animals. She played the piano, guitar, and violin, and taught
generations of children to play, also. She adored Lassie, the collie they
had when the children were young, and adopted two lively kittens in her
later years. She stayed involved in the church as her abilities allowed
and radiated a warm Christian spirit.
In her last year it became more difficult for her to
live alone, so she moved into the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center. While
there she met many friends and made new ones, and especially enjoyed
sharing youthful memories. She was also able to continue with her love of
music.
She had ten grandchildren: Matt, Karin, Chantel, Eric,
Aly, Jon, Kristina, Isabella, Kathleen, and Ava. And there are now seven
great-grandchildren: Marcus, Corbin, Greta, Ivan, Kaleb, Thor, and Joseph,
and one more on the way.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband, Bertil, and her sister, Ruth.
Lorraine was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved her Lord and her
family. She loved life.
Peace to her memory.

The Mayor Sez ...
The following news item was on the internet the other
day. A Lady mayor from Arlington, Oregon posed for a picture in her
underwear in front of a city fire truck and then posted it for the firemen to
look at. Needless to say it caused a public outrage and may have cost
her the mayor's job. There was no mention of any complaints from the
firemen.
We have had a harsh winter and hope that Mother Nature
melts the snow in a timely manner. We appreciate everyone for bearing
with us. Myself and the council want to recognize Bill T. and his street
crew for doing a great job. We salute!

Born April 12, 1918, on her grandparents' farm near

school attended by her mother) for eight years with Miss Alletta Grant as her
teacher. She graduated from Normal Training at Rolfe High School in 1935.

continued their many interests. They enjoyed traveling and visited all the
states plus Canada. Darrell died in 1995.
