The Mayor Sez…
It’s “poppy day”, so, get out those coin purses and
empty them out (don’t let the moths get in your way)! If you want a poppy call
City Hall and they will direct you to a sales person. It is the best way I
know to help the disabled veterans. They thank you!
Last week, I suggested that we tidy up around town and
get ready for our visiting friends and relatives that will be here for the
Memorial Day weekend. The City thanks you!
Memorial Day weekend signals the beginning of the three
holiday weekends of the summer. May we all enjoy them safely (please, Lord,
may the summer not pass too swiftly).
Last week was Emergency Medical Service week and I was
pleased to see a full page in the Chronicle, recognizing our volunteers that
do such a great job. Odebolt is very fortunate to have this group of first
responders. We salute!

American Cancer Society's Relay for Life
To Sac County Residents:
Summer is just around the corner and it is almost time
for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Sac County. This
year it will be held in Lake View on June 25th.
The ACS Relay for Life will take your breath away. It's
a 7-hour team event filled with fun, food and friendship. Surrounded by
people of all ages joined together to honor cancer survivors and
remember loved ones that lost the battle. More than 70 percent of the
money raised from the ACS Relay for Life goes directly to support the
American Cancer Society's programs for research, education and services
for patients and their families whose lives have been touched by cancer.
To introduce myself, my name is Bethany Jones. I am the
Odebolt Editor for the Chronicle. And I am also the Secretary/Bookkeeper
for the Odebolt Chamber of Commerce. I have been chosen to be the
team captain for The Chronicle's team, Wiseman's Copy Cats, for
this year's ACS Relay for Life event. We currently are the only team
representing Odebolt for this year's event. With that said, the reason I
am writing to you today is to ask for your help in finding a cure for
cancer. As a team, our fundraising goal is $500 and we really need your
help to meet this challenge.
But our challenge is nothing in comparison to the
challenge so many children and adults have to face 24 hours a day once
diagnosed with cancer. I feel blessed to be part of such an important
cause.
Please help support our efforts this year with a
tax-deductible contribution to the American Cancer Society. You may send
your check (made out to American Cancer Society) directly to
The Chronicle
P.O. Box 485
Odebolt, Iowa 51458.
We are also offering luminaries. A luminary is for
honoring or in memory of a family member or friend that lost the battle
or is fighting the battle with cancer. There is no specified cost for a
luminary, however a suggested donation of $5.00 is being asked. If you
would like to have a luminary placed around the track please send your
donation along with the following information: Name and message to
be put on each bag (please keep brief) and if it¹s in honor of or in
memory of them; your name and address.
We are also selling purple hope bracelets. They are
$1.00 a piece and are a great way of showing you care about such a
strong issue, finding a cure for cancer! They are on display at the
Chronicle at 216 Main Street in Odebolt.
Together, we can make a difference! Remember ...
there's no finish line until we find a cure!
Warm Regards and many thanks,
Wiseman¹s Copy Cats

The Mayor Sez…
Hey, hey, it’s the month of May! It’s time to think
about our upcoming Odebolt Creek Days as it’s only six weeks away. If you
would care to volunteer to help, please contact City Hall. From set up,
to clean up, and anything in between, we can find a spot for you.
Folks, let me tell you, there are many exciting,
positive things going on in Odebolt this summer. Such as the Community Center
dedication on June 4th, Odebolt Creek Days June 18-19 with the BIG alumni
banquet on the 17th, a number of huge business constructions, getting our
railroad crossings replaced, and last, but not least, the long overdue razing
of some downtown buildings.
From the 'Bolt,
R.J. Rex, Mayor

Area Working Women Recognized - National
Administrative Professionals Week (formerly Professional Secretaries Week) was
observed April 17-23. Several working professional women in Odebolt were
presented with a rose compliments of their employers. Pictured in this
issue is Kristan Bieber of The Chronicle who had the honor of
delivering the individual roses, presenting Phyllis Franken, City of Odebolt
employee, with her flower.
Odebolt Family Sweeps Denison Stock Car Class - One of
the most exciting races of the Crawford County Speedway opener Friday night,
April 29, 2005, was the Sock Car Feature in which the top three finishers were
all from Odebolt, and related.
Mick King, formerly of Odebolt, Mark Hansen, and Chris
Hansen were all part of the Stock Car class race. Mick finished first,
Mark was second and Chris took third.
The fans cheered as excitement grew throughout the
race. Mick King took the early lead over his brother-in-law, Chris
Hansen, who was closely followed by his father, Mark Hansen. After
battling back and forth with his son, Mark was finally able to get around
Chris and move up to 2nd. Not wanting to be out-done by his son-in-law,
Mark boldly nudged Mick's rear bumper as the crowd went wild. Nearing
the finish line, Mark nearly passed Mick on the outside, but Mick moved toward
the wall to close his father-in-law off at the finish line, for the win.
Mick's car, number 4R, is owned by Reis Auto Parts and
Service (Pat, Becky, Travis and Mark Reis) of Odebolt. He graciously
acknowledged the contributors to the car in his victory speech, which include
Lee Cranston, Cropmate, Don's Diesel Repair, The Electric Company, Hemer's
Plumbing and Heating, King Construction, Mark Hansen's Rex Chevrolet and Sykes
Brothers.
Other area drivers who raced at the opener were Blake
Reis of Odebolt, who placed second in the Hobby Stock Class, and Chris Ullrich
of Kiron who finished 8th in the Modified class.
Odebolt Library - See this issue for a list of people
who donated to the Library Memorial fund, and for new books and DVD's at the
Odebolt Public Library.
The ONRC Auxiliary met April 21 with 14 members
present. Quilts for the upcoming Bazaar have been selected and
purchased. Assisted Living is progressing with 10 units planned.
The Ice Cream Social will be May 9, at 2:30 p.m. It was voted to raffle
a grill as a fundraiser for an ice cream machine. About 64 attended the
pancake supper. The Auxiliary's next meeting is May 19 at 9 a.m. in the
activity room.
ONRC Volunteers were honored April 20th with a
Volunteer Brunch in observance of National Volunteer week. Egg Bake and
fruit cups were served. Door prizes were given and each volunteer
received an appreciation gift. Entertainment was provided by a group of
O-A High School Chorus students, led by Linda Johnson and accompanied by Kay
Bloyer.
Friend of Education - Mrs. Janet (Brian) Down has been
selected by the Odebolt-Arthur Education Association as the 2005 recipient of
the Friend of Education Award. Janet will receive a certificate of
appreciation from the Iowa State Education Association, along with a gift
certificate for dinner at a local restaurant from the O-A Education
Association.
Janet has been a tireless worker for twenty years
donating her time, energy, and expertise to many teachers and numerous
students. She continues to help even though the Down family has grown up
and left home. Janet's special touch is appreciated at O-A.
Soldier Visits Arthur Middle School - On Tuesday, April
26th a sixth grade middle school girl was surprised to find that an assembly
had been held, just for her.
During the assembly, Taylor Rucker, daughter of William
and Terry Flink of Odebolt, was surprised when a young soldier came forward
and began to thank her for the care package he received while overseas.
Taylor, part of Western Iowa Tech's Talent Search
program, sent a care package to Private First Class Anthony Kasdorf, of Sioux
City, serving in Iraq. Included in the care package was a letter telling
about a 6th grade girl who loved basketball, along with many other items
Anthony had not seen since being away.
PFC Anthony Kasdorf, part of the 3rd Infantry Division
and a Medic for the U.S. Army, made the stop to see Taylor while being home on
a 2-week leave. After addressing the crowd, which included radio and
T.V. stations, the soldier was greeted up close by the Middle School students
for a Q & A session.
Taylor currently has a step-brother who will be leaving
for his second duty in Iraq, so she personally understands the hardships that
families go through while having a soldier overseas. (See photo in this week's
issue.)
Taylor received a gift package from Kasdorf that
included a duffle bag, a basketball, money from Iraq and a bandana from an
Iraqi eight-year-old, who Kasdorf had helped overseas ... as well as a big
hug.

From an odebolt.net reader, Todd Gronemeyer
- I was home the weekend before Easter
and was lucky enough to be able to tour the new community center thanks
to Steve "Spear" Bengford. It was the first time I saw it.
The last time I was in the building, it was still Beckman Motors. What a
glorious transformation! "Spear" was telling me how he and his brother
and sisters had donated the mural of the old Odebolt depot in the memory
of their folks (Jerry and Ruth) and brothers (Roger and Danny).
I don't know if you've heard this before or not-- it is
really eerie, but GREAT and should be experienced by all that visit the
center, and should be announced via your website and again at the
official dedication ceremony! Anyway, the mural had been finished and
not too long afterwards, the center hosted some sort of function and
"Spear" was there as usual. It was brought to his attention by Bob and
Phyll Tiefentahler that if you focus your eyes on railroad tracks in the
mural and walk from the front of the building all the way to the back,
and then walk from the back to the front, the tracks follow you as you
walk!! They get larger, then closer together as you move further
away--but they always follow you!!
Artists work very hard to create such an effect. I know
that mural painters work from photos they are provided with to do their
work as I have watched a few in progress. Whether or not this artist
intended it or it is just some sort of freaky happenstance--it's there
for all to experience for a long time!! "Spear" told me that he likes to
think of it as his folks and brothers being able to watch all the
comings and goings, as if they were still there !
Thank you for all the hard work and time you devote to
the website. I log on almost every day!!
Best Regards,
Todd Gronemeyer
2005 MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES - The Odebolt American Legion and Auxiliary
Roose Post #313 will be
conducting a Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. at Odebolt Cemetery. The
Program will include presentation of colors and reading of the veterans'
names. The Odebolt-Arthur band will perform and Pastor Underberg
will give a message. Closing will be a rifle salute and playing of
taps.
Community Center Dedication Coming June 4th, 2005!
- A full evening of fun is planned
for the dedication of the Odebolt Community Center. The festivities begin with
a social hour, 4:30 to 5:30, (cash bar) and a meal of maidrites & chips
catered by Herby's Bar and Grill.
The Dedication will include speeches, recognitions and
a short video. A program with "home-grown" entertainers, Gary Johnson,
Jim & Jess Howard, and the barbershop quartet "Voice Exchange", precedes DJ
Dance Music or Karaoke by "Spin Master" to end out the evening from 9 to
closing. Plan to attend and celebrate our fine new facility!
