The Mayor Sez…
We had our 911 quarterly board meeting last week and an item came up that I felt is worth mentioning in my column. In case of an emergency necessitating a 911 call, after 911 is dialed STAY ON THE LINE as there could be up to an 18 second delay before the communication center operator comes on the line (due to router electronics). Please make note of this and write down this number, 712-668-2221, and put it on the ‘fridge. This is the non-emergency number that goes into the communications center from Odebolt. Use this number for non-emergency contact when city hall is closed. For my readers in neighboring towns please refer to your phone book for your toll-free non-emergency number.
Autumn officially began last weekend. Let us hope for a bountiful harvest for our farmer neighbors and friends.
Congratulations to the homecoming candidates. Go OA!!
Just a reminder that Santa Claus is coming to Odebolt on Dec. 1st, just 65 days from today. It’s later than we think!!

OBITUARY
EDNA GROVE
Edna Grove, 87, of Holstein, Iowa, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center, Holstein, Iowa.
Services were held at 10:00 am on Monday, September 24, 2007, at United Methodist Church with Pastor Todd Schlitter officiating. Burial was in the Schaller Cemetery, Schaller, Iowa.
Edna was born October 18, 1919, to Harry and Hattie (Alderson) Ohlsen at Schaller, Iowa. She worked on the farm with her parents.
Edna married Burley E. Grove at the family farm on February 27, 1940. The couple farmed surrounding areas of Arthur and Galva until retirement. The couple was blessed with four children.
Edna was a wonderful wife and mother. She worked many years at the Horn Memorial Hospital, Ida Grove, Iowa. She welcomed many new babies, helped moms adjust to motherhood, and acquired a vast number of friends. She truly enjoyed her many years at the hospital and all the memories she accumulated.
Edna was a member of the United Methodist Church, Arthur, Iowa, until transferring her membership to the United Methodist Church, Holstein, Iowa. She appreciated her church family very much.
Edna loved to share her talent and ability of taking scraps of material and turning them into beautiful quilts and then sharing them with family members and friends. Her sewing machine was always humming with her little, white head bent over another quilt. She was very well known for her famous apple pies, her delicious chicken pot pies, and her never ending pot of homemade noodles. There were always noodles simmering on the stove waiting for someone to stop in.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Burley, granddaughter, Christie Baker; and brother, Paul Ohlsen.
Mom will be missed by her four children and their spouses, Sherry and Gary Gritten of Odebolt, Iowa, Rochelle and Hank Luscombe of Holstein, Iowa, Katie and Steve James of Madison, South Dakota, and Ronnie and Jeanie Grove of Battle Creek, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one brother, Wilbur and his wife Jo Ohlsen of Rockwell City, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Marci Ohlsen of Costa Mesa, California.

The Mayor Sez…
Last week’s article about Santa Claus coming to town excluded everyone except women’s organizations. All organizations are welcome to contribute or join in on the fun. Sorry ‘bout that!
The hardest part about writing a weekly article is that sometimes I simply don’t get all the bases covered. When it comes to community involvement; it will always be my intent to include everyone. Enough said!
The North Main/Highway 75 intersection is open!! It’s not done, however, it is open. If the proper pressure hadn’t been applied it would still be closed. The DOT blamed the prime contractor (Cedar Valley) and vice-versa. I know I speak for everyone when I say that we certainly are enjoying our new highway.

HARVEST FESTIVAL
AT PRAIRIE PEDLAR

On Saturday, September 29th, we will host a Harvest Festival. The local 4-H club is growing pumpkins and gourds at the Prairie Pedlar this summer and their produce will likely be ripe and ready for sale.
In addition, we will have new fall merchandise in the gift shop. In recent years, decorating the home for fall - and for Halloween, in particular - has become big business for retailers. We've fallen for some of the most charming autumn decor and will showcase it in the gift shop on that day.
In addition, the Sac County Area Quilters will be hosting a "Quilt-A-Fair" at the Sac County Fair Grounds in Sac City from 10:00 - 4:00. The featured event includes the display of quilts of all kinds and sizes.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to tour around the county and see some of the 75+ painted quilts that adorn the historic barns, museums and communities of Sac County - including the Double Aster quilt on our Sears & Roebuck barn.
Vintage quilts will also be displayed in several of the county museums during the weekend. Come see our quilt garden that features a planted fan pattern of creeping sedums. We'll have our antique fan quilt on the bed post and we'll also be displaying some of our own quilts in the garden for added interest.
Enjoy both of these festive events in Sac County - It's a great way to spend a Saturday!  Prairie Pedlar Web Site

Sac County Quilt-A-Fair...Fun for Everyone!
If you love barns, quilts, gardens, heritage, or rural beauty, Sac County is the place to be September 29 and 30. The first-ever Sac County Quilt-A-Fair is taking place that weekend. The Quilt-A-Fair is a quilt festival for the whole county. Residents and visitors alike are invited to visit the two-day quilt show at the Sac County fair grounds in Sac City, tour the county to see some of the 75+ barn quilts that grace our historic farm buildings and communities, visit our local museums to see the vintage quilts displayed there, see gardens sprinkled with quilts, including a planted quilt garden of creeping sedums, and enjoy the hospitality of businesses and other attractions all over Sac County.
The quilt show in Sac City will feature two buildings full of beautiful quilts, old and new. There will be family heirloom quilts on display, as well as quilts finished just in time for the show! Baby quilts, Christmas quilts, quilted wall hangings and home accessories, as well as bed quilts will fill the 4-H and Open Class buildings on the fair grounds. Visitors will also have the chance to see a beautiful quilt commissioned by Iowa State Senator Steve Kettering, which features each of the 55 barn quilt blocks. The quilt, made by the Patchwork Pals quilting group in Lake View, is truly a work of art. The name of each quilt pattern and barn owner is embroidered on the quilt and each of the blocks features the actual colors used on the barn quilts. Postcards featuring this quilt have been produced and each visitor will receive a complimentary copy with the price of admission. There will be two new barn quilts on display, for which visitors can purchase a raffle ticket. A queen-size quilt made by supporters of Sac County 4-H programs will also be displayed and raffle tickets will be available for purchase.
The Sac City Kiwanis Club will have their food stand open throughout the show. Thirteen different quilt vendors from central and northwest Iowa will have booths to display all their new quilts, fabrics, notions and kits. "This will be an excellent opportunity for quilters and those who have an interest in learning to quilt to see what's new and available in quilt shops," said Cathy Cook of Wall Lake, who first proposed the idea of the quilt show. The vendors and other quilters will also be providing hourly demonstrations for the public to enjoy.
Another special feature of the show will be a display of eight new barn quilt paintings by the artist Toni Grote, who grew up in Sac County. Grote also will have note cards of the barn quilt paintings available for purchase at the show.
A silent auction of handcrafted quilt items and a "bits and pieces" area for recycled quilt supplies will take place at the quilt show. Of course, the primary attraction will be the beautiful quilts made or owned by Sac County area residents. "To help prepare for this event, we have even decorated the fair grounds with barn quilts," said Sue Peyton, a quilt show committee member. "The Jackson 4-H Club painted two large barn quilts for the two quilt show buildings. Junior 4-H members from all over the county helped paint four other smaller barn quilts that decorate barns and other buildings on the grounds," she added.
Sac County businesses have been extremely gracious in providing door prizes and other items for welcome bags. Each quilt show visitor will receive a welcome bag with a variety of items tucked inside. Some of the discount coupons and gift certificates in the bags will more than offset the admission cost for the quilt show.
The Sac County Quilt-A-Fair provides the perfect opportunity to tour around the county to see the barn quilts and to visit museums, businesses, and other attractions in Sac County. The Lytton, Sac City and Odebolt museums will be open Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Prairie Pedlar, near Odebolt, is sponsoring a Harvest Festival on Saturday, which will feature a growing quilt garden and quilts sprinkled throughout the numerous theme gardens. Refreshments will be offered there as well.
Sac County is definitely the place to be on September 29 and 30. Mark your calendars and plan to spend some time enjoying the Sac County Quilt-A-Fair.

From the Odebolt History Pages

Since the Youngren Farm was designated a Century Farm this summer, we thought it would be a good time to post some history on the family taken from the 1977 Odebolt Centennial history book, "As Time Goes By".  www.rootsweb.com/~iaohms/bio_t_z.html

The Youngren Family

(Source: “As Time Goes By”, Odebolt, Iowa 1877-1977,
printed by The Odebolt Chronicle May, 1977, p.73)

Peter Youngren was born December 11, 1863, in Sweden.  He came to Odebolt in 1881 and engaged in farming and mercantile pursuits.  He operated a store called "Youngren & Smith The Grocers".
On October 2, 1892, Peter married Bessie Larson, born August 18, 1870 in Ramsdalan, Norway.  Bessie came to the United States in the spring of 1889 and located in the Odebolt vicinity.  Peter died September 14, 1893 of typhoid fever and Peter and Bessie's son Paul, was born six days later.
After Peter's death Mrs. Youngren sold her husband's interest in the store to Pete Hedberg.  In 1895 Bessie Youngren married Alfred Youngren, a brother of Peter.  To Alfred and Bessie two sons were born, Hilmer and Bert.  Bert died in childhood.
In 1908 Bessie was again widowed when Alfred died as a result of falling from a load of hay.  Bessie managed to stay on the farm with her two sons, with the aid of hired help, until her sons were old enough to take over.  Mrs. Youngren died in November 1922.  Her son Paul married Clara Larsen; and Paul and Clara's son Carol Youngren and family now (in 1977)  live on the Youngren farm.

The Odebolt-Arthur Community calendars are out. If you have not picked one up there are a few left at the Chronicle office; our “thanks” go to our Odebolt Rotary Club and the business sponsors thereof. We Salute!!
Hanging limbs from trees on the parking have become a problem around town, especially for our school buses. If the limb is hanging lower than 16 feet over the street (8 feet off the sidewalk) it must be trimmed off. Your attention to the above matter will be appreciated.

Service Ministry in Kentucky--(photo) Volunteers from the Odebolt community recently returned from a week of service in Perry County, Kentucky. Working as part of Appalachia Service Project (ASP), a Johnson City, Tennessee-based home repair ministry, the group helped to provide urgently needed home repair services free of charge to families in need in that area. This trip was made possible with the support of the area churches and community. The team delivered quilts, dolls with baby blankets, children's and adult books, school supplies and prayers from the area churches. This is the fourth trip for several of the team. The group looks forward to going again and invite those who wish to serve to contact Steve and Kris Gunderson. Pictured serving on ASP 2007 are Kyle Carroll of Lake View; and David Currie, Steve Gunderson, Tayli Thompson, Kim Neumann and Kris Gunderson, all of Odebolt.

REMEMBER
Six Years Later:
Reflecting Back, Looking Ahead

On September 11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks on our nation killed thousands of innocent men, women and children in a matter of hours. Six years later, the aftermath of this tragedy remains fresh in the hearts and minds of Americans. We continue to remember and mourn the victims.
On September 11, 2007, we pay tribute to those whose lives were taken, and pray for the families who continue to grieve. America has turned tragedy and grief into a strengthened resolve to protect liberty, and we salute the brave troops who continue to defend our freedom abroad. Six years later and forever, we remember September 11, 2001.
God bless our Soldiers, and God bless America!

Five years ago voters renewed a PPEL levy in the O-A District. This funding stream runs out at the end of the current school year and needs to be renewed. Funds from this levy are very important to the District by supporting such things as the purchase of technology, the purchase of vehicles (support vehicles and buses), and the completion of building projects.
Facility maintenance and updates are important for the safety of our students and patrons. We are also continuously striving to offer our students the most supporting learning environment possible. Voters will be asked to approve this funding for an additional five years.
If you have questions about this vote or how the funding has been used, please contact any school board member or myself.
Dani Trimble
O-A Superintendent
